The Provost’s Outstanding Lecturer Award recognizes significant and ongoing contributions
to the university’s educational mission. It honors a full-time lecturer who has demonstrated
excellence in teaching, service, and professional development in support of this mission.

Eligibility
All full-time lecturers who taught an in-person or online course during the current
academic year, including summer 2024, fall 2024, or spring 2025 semesters, provided
they served as a primary instructor of record.
Selection Criteria
Evidence of effective course design, student-centered teaching, and meaningful integration
of technology to enhance learning.
Contributions to the field of pedagogy through ongoing professional development, participation
in educational research, and service to the department or university.
Selection Process
Nomination packages are reviewed by a committee of faculty and academic leaders with
expertise in educational practices and teaching excellence.
Nomination Requirements
Nominations may be prepared by the Department or Academic Unit Chair, but must be
submitted by the Dean’s Office.
While there is no limit to the number of nominations the Dean’s Office may submit,
units are strongly encouraged to rank nominees and submit only the most outstanding
candidates.

Letter of endorsement from the Dean, not to exceed three pages
Optional Letters of Support: Up to three letters from faculty, staff, or students
within the university. Letters should not exceed three pages.

Current CV, to include:
A list of all courses taught, at Stony Brook and elsewhere, over the past two academic
years, including course number, title, topic, semester, description, and enrollment
numbers;
List of service on departmental and university governance and administrative committees
with dates and duration of service;
List of significant contributions to teaching and pedagogy;
A statement on teaching (no more than two pages) outlining the lecturer's philosophy, principles, and values, and how these are implemented
in the classroom.
The College/School Dean's Office must submit the final nomination packet.
Outstanding Mentor Award
The Outstanding Mentor Award acknowledges senior faculty for their exceptional dedication
to mentoring non-tenure track, pre-tenure, and mid-career faculty. It celebrates mentors who provide guidance, foster professional growth, and support
a healthy work-life balance.

Full-time faculty at the advanced rank of Associate Professor or Professor rank.
Retired faculty are eligible for nomination.
Unit leaders and department chairs who are expected to mentor junior faculty, Deans,
and administrators in the Office of the Dean or the Provost are not eligible for this
award.
Selection Criteria
A demonstrated commitment to supporting the intellectual, creative, scholarly, and
professional growth of faculty mentees, as evidenced by their success at the university,
within professional societies, and on the national or international stage
Evidence of sustained involvement in mentoring relationships that contribute to the
career growth or personal development of faculty mentees
Selection Process
Nomination packages are reviewed by a committee of senior faculty and academic leaders
with expertise in mentoring and faculty development.

Nominations may be prepared by the Department or Academic Unit Chair, colleagues,
or mentee(s), but must be submitted by the Dean’s Office.

This award is designed to recognize faculty who are mentoring other faculty members,
including non-tenure track, pre-tenure, and mid-career mentees.

Stony Brook Trustees Faculty Awards
The Stony Brook Trustees Faculty Award recognizes promising early-career faculty for
their significant contributions to research, scholarship, and art-making. These awards
provide funding opportunities to support and advance their work in these areas.

Full-time second-term Assistant Professors, specifically those who have successfully
completed their review process after being in residence at SBU for at least three
years
Early-career faculty whose research, creative activities, and scholarly achievements
predict an exceptional trajectory
Selection Process
Nomination packages are reviewed by a committee of senior faculty and academic leaders
with distinguished careers in research, scholarship, and art-making.
Selection Criteria
Achievement as a faculty member, particularly in research, publications, and scholarly
or artistic contributions.
Institutional impact and the potential for continued professional growth.
Clarity, quality, and significance of long-term research, scholarship, or creative
activity and their likely impact on the institution and the broader academic community.
Feasibility of the proposed work, including alignment of the budget with project objectives.

Nomination letter: A letter, not to exceed three pages, from the dean or director
that includes the nominee’s name, faculty appointment date at SBU, a summary of the
nominee’s qualifications, and specific examples of achievements such as publications,
performances, monographs, and inventions, tailored to the nominee’s discipline.
Letter of support: Not to exceed three pages, from the department/academic unit chair.
Three letters of reference: One letter should come from an external referee, excluding
former mentors. Letters should not exceed three pages
Nominee’s CV
Project Narrative (5-page limit, 12-point font, single-spaced; references excluded):
The narrative should address the creative significance of the project, highlighting its importance and potential impact. It should provide
a clear description of the project’s objectives, methods, and expected outcomes, explaining how the project aligns with the nominee’s broader scholarship program
and demonstrating its contribution to ongoing research or creative work. It should
specify which aspects of the project will be completed during the award period, and
if necessary, include a timeline. A detailed budget should outline how the award funds will be allocated, including justifications for
each item (indirect/administrative or graduate tuition costs are not allowed). Additionally,
the narrative should identify any additional funding sources, specifying the agency/program, the scope of work involved, and the overlap in budget
and scope with this award.
The funds are intended for research, scholarship, and creative art. This includes
expenses such as materials and supplies, travel to research sites, student assistants,
and professional development activities like conference registration and travel. Funds
should be expended within one calendar year, and a no-cost extension for a second
year requires justification before the end of the first year.
Compliance Regulations
Faculty must adhere to SBU rules regarding the use of human and animal subjects,
biosafety, radioactive materials, patents, copyrights, export controls, and other
relevant policies. Faculty are responsible for ensuring compliance and can obtain
additional guidance from the Office of Sponsored Programs.
Reporting Requirements
Award recipients are required to submit a brief report (up to 2 pages) detailing the
outcomes of the project within 60 days following the end of the award period. The
report should be emailed to faculty_affairs@stonybrook.edu. When submitting the report, please include the award name and your name in the subject
line for reference.
