A Tour and StoryMap in Commemoration of September 11 at Stony Brook University

Memorial

On August 25, 2025, the 9/11 Planning Committee  (consisting of Kristen Nyitray, Nancy Tomes, and Daniel Henao developed a self-guided walking tour and StoryMap at Stony Brook University to commemorate the victims of the September 11 attacks of 2001. Of those who were thought to have died, 21 Stony Brook alums were lost, along with many others from Long Island and the larger New York state.

The self-guided tour leads participants through several memorial sites located on Stony Brook University's west campus. These sites house sculptures and commemorative displays dedicated to the members of the Stony Brook community who lost their lives in the September 11 attacks. Participants can access the sites by following an accompanying digital StoryMap, which shares information on how the memorials were produced, their commemoration, and the symbolic significance and impact of their installation on campus.

In addition to the tour and StoryMap, the 9/11 Planning Committee has also provided links to several virtual sites, including digital archives, exhibits, and collections, to document and remember those affected by the September 11 attacks.
