Extent, Scope, and Content Note
This curated collection of nearly 1000 postcards (3.5 linear ft.) of Long Island, New York offers a visual window into the region’s evolving identity
from the late 19th to mid-20th century. The collector, Emory Payson Tuttle, was the son of Ray Tuttle (1895-1972) and Ruth Hawkins Tuttle
(1897-1956).
The geographical emphasis of the postcards is sites and scenes in Suffolk County. Once a rural landscape of fishing villages and farmland, areas of Long Island have gradually transformed into destinations for seaside tourism and suburban development. These postcards - ranging from scenic beaches and historic lighthouses to bustling main streets and quiet hamlets - reflect the social and economic shifts that shaped the area. As both souvenirs and communications, postcards served to preserve memory, promote travel, and document local pride, making them invaluable artifacts of American visual and regional history.
