Arts Everywhere: Showcasing Transformation from Chemistry to Art

Showcase reception:
Tuesday, November 18, 2025 | 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm
Chemistry Building Lobby

Curated by art history majors Rebecca Zhang ‘27 and Ynuel Spencer ‘

A smiling woman in a red sweater stands in front of the Colosseum in Rome. The ancient structure's arches create a historic backdrop, conveying travel joy.  A person with curly hair and glasses wears a black collared shirt. They stand against a plain white background, conveying a neutral expression.

The Arts Everywhere: Showcasing Transformation from Chemistry to Art exhibition,
part of the CAS Arts Everywhere Initiative, invites student artists to reflect on chemistry, not just as a science, but as a metaphor for change, connection, and material transformation.

All students, regardless of major, are invited to submit works for consideration for this launch exhibition!

This exhibition, to be showcased in the Chemistry building, asks:

  • What happens when we think of art as a kind of experiment?
  • How do materials react, transform, or interact?
  • What meanings emerge from those reactions?

    WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
  • Contribute your works of art – sculptures and installations that engage ideas of process, transformation, and interaction
  • Works might respond to the physicality of materials, the act of creation, or the invisible forces that shape matter and experience
  • Works can be, but are not limited to, freestanding, hanging sculpture, ceramic, painting/drawing and installation

Note: We are unable to accommodate video art, e.g. works that need to be plugged in, in this exhibit space.
HOW TO CONTRIBUTE:
Consider the following ideas:
  • What comes to mind artistically when you think of chemistry in the context of symmetry, shape, color, spatiality, and structure?
  • What does chemistry 'mean' to you?
  • Chemistry also has a connotation of compatibility and synergy. What does that stir in you when you think of these concepts?
  • Is chemistry synonymous with modernity or is there a stronger connection with nature? After all, chemistry is the central science; we and everything around us are all made up of atoms, molecules, and bonds that exist as building blocks to enable and create a greater structure, context, and organization. It is the enabler of complexity, consciousness, and creativity.

ELIGIBILITY:
