Graduate Academic Internship
MBA 599 Internship Course
Real-World Experience with Academic Value
A graduate academic internship offers students the chance to bridge advanced classroom learning with hands-on experience in a professional environment. This form of experiential education integrates theoretical knowledge with practical skill development, allowing students to apply what they’ve learned in a real-world context. Eligible graduate students may earn academic credit, with the internship overseen by a faculty sponsor. These internships typically align with the length of an academic term, are generally part-time, and may be paid or unpaid. What makes academic internships distinct from other professional roles is the inclusion of structured, intentional reflection guided by predetermined learning objectives.
MBA 599 may count as one of your elective courses towards your MBA program.

Your Roadmap to Earning Credit
1. SECURE AN INTERNSHIP
Internships may be on or off-campus, paid or unpaid, and may be found through Handshake, the Career Center, or other outside sources. Please note that you should be securing an internship that correlates to your specific business area of study (i.e. a marketing internship if you are in the MBA in Marketing program, a finance internship if you are in the MBA in Finance program, etc.).
If you need assistance finding an internship, please schedule an appointment with the Graduate Business Career Coach through Handshake.
You will need contact information for the supervisor you are reporting to at your internship. This site supervisor will provide a position description that outlines your responsibilities and expectations for work performance, and will provide training, mentoring, and supervision of your work on site.
2. SECURE A COB FACULTY SPONSOR
You are responsible for obtaining a CoB faculty member who believes your internship is worthy of academic credit and is willing to work with you throughout the term. They will approve your learning goals, and assign and assess academic work necessary to help you reach them. The faculty sponsor will issue your final grade for the course.
3. CALCULATE YOUR INTERNSHIP CREDIT HOURS
- 1 credit = 50 hours (approx. 4 hours/week)
- 2 credits = 100 hours (approx. 8 hours/week)
- 3 credits = 150 hours (approx. 12 hours/week)
*While the MBA 599 course can be completed for 1 or 2 credits, in order for it to count as an elective towards your MBA it must count for 3 credits*
4. SUBMIT YOUR EXPERIENCE THROUGH HANDSHAKE
The experience will go through an approval process where both your faculty sponsor and site supervisor approve the internship details.
